The last 20 years has inspired a passion for grape growing and wine making. My career has allowed me to be lucky enough to have a collection of great mentors from the age of 12 until I was experienced enough to do do it by myslef.
Cambridge Valley Vineyard captured my heart and I care for it as though it was my own child. The predominant blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were planted in 1999. The Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris blocks were planted the following year.
The vines have now reached the perfect age to develop wine characters that are extremely desirable and that can not be replicated in younger vines. The grapes harvested from this vineyard produce wine that is full bodies, well balanced and well rounded, as well as versatile allowing us to create a vast array of different styles from a crisp light summer style wine to a full bodied rich red that is perfect for a cold winter night when you are sitting by warm fire.
Kate Hill, Winemaker
Kate Hill worked her first winery job at the De Bortoli winery in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, for vintage 1998, and has been involved in winemaking now for over twenty years.
Since then, she has worked at Joseph Phelps vineyards in the Napa Valley, Vina Tarapaca in the Maipo Valley of Chile and Maison Chapoutier of the Northern Rhone Valley in France. In Australia, she worked vintages for Hardy’s in Western Australia then Southcorp Wines back in Victoria, based in the Yarra Valley. In 2002, she moved to Griffith in the Riverina, New South Wales, to work for Orlando Wyndham where they processed 30,000 tonnes of sparkling, white and red fruit largely for the Jacob’s Creek label. After four years in this role, she decided to move to southern Tasmania where she could make her preferred wines – those from grapes grown in a cool climate. For vintage 2006, she worked at Stefano Lubiana Wines at Granton in southern Tasmania.
Kate and her husband, Charles, established their own label, Kate Hill Wines, in 2008. They have a vineyard and winery in the Huon Valley, south of Hobart. They produce sparkling, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
